Reading Notes: Ramayana PDE Part A

General Story Line and Thoughts:

King Dasharatha:
1. Lots of imagery: setting and background
2. There is an issue--lack of an heir. 
Here is introduced a vast amount of imagery and the beginning of a plot!
Dasharatha's Sons:
1. They performed a sacrifice trying to receive an heir.
2. We are introduced to more characters.
3. We have a promise/prophecy.
Avatar:
1. We have interaction among gods.
2. Demon king--bad guy.
3. Vishnu offers himself as four sons to save them from Ravana.
4. Rama was the most beautiful, and showed similarities to Vishnu.
Here, the prophecy comes true and the hero emerges.
Vishvamitra:
1. Only Rama can overcome the devils.
2. Brothers head off to fight.
Thataka:
1. Jungle setting housing a misshapen woman with powers of sorcery.
2. Only Rama could kill her. 
3. Next he killed the demons that tried to hinder him. 
Bhagiratha and Ganga:
1. Side story.
2. About saving dead ancestors.
3. Ganga eventually saves them.
Ahalya:
1.Rama continues his journey.
2. He finds a dwelling that belonged to indra.
3. Lots and lots of quotes.
4. Rama coming to this place freed her.
Sita:
1. First physical appearance description.
2. Rama meets Sita.
3. They fall in love.
Love story emerging! This could be heavily expanded on.
King Janaka:
1. King offers Sita to whomever can "bend the weapon"
Rama Wins Sita:
1. Rama wins, duh.
2. Sita is given to Sita.
Parashurama
1.Man in loincloth shows up.
2. Shiva worshipper.
3. Rama strings ANOTHER bow.
Rama and Sita's Wedding
1, Wedding preparation happening.
2. Vows are spoken.
3. All married up!
Rama the Heir Apparent:
1. Dasharatha wants Rama to be king.
2. Everyone agrees. 
Here we have the succession of a son.
Manthara:
1. We finally find someone who doesn't like Rama.
Here is an entirely new issue arising.
Kaikeyi and Dasharatha:
1.Kaikeyi was found on the floor in a bad state.
2.She requests that her son be installed and Rama be vanished.
3. He was stricken and she threatens him with her own life. 
Here is a big predicament--choosing between love and heir.
He grants it but rejects her. Double loss :/
Rama is banished:
1.Rama is being celebrated, but Kaikeyi called a meeting.
2.Rama received his instructions cheerfully.
Wow cool guy!


Rama goes into exile:
1. Sita insisted on exiling with him.
2. Following her, so did Lakshamana.
Crossing the River:
1. They cross Ganga.
Dasharatha's Karma:
1. It is revealed that he has killed a man by accident. 
2. His sorrow over his son was prophesied long before. 
Son suffering as a results of a fathers actions.
Dasharatha's Death:
1. He died of grief.
2. Accompanied by two of his wives and none of his sons.
